The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is embarking on an ambitious expansion project, aiming to enhance its facilities and accommodate a growing student population. The university has set its sights on transforming a former Walmart into a state-of-the-art student recreation center, complete with office and warehouse space. This project is part of a larger initiative to purchase the Cherokee Mills office complex for up to $26.5 million, with the university already leasing 138,402 square feet within the building. The University Financing Foundation acquired Cherokee Mills for $20.7 million in December 2024, with plans to lease and potentially purchase the property for UT. The university is also proposing a $253.38 million project to build new housing and replace three existing dorms, aiming to accommodate more than 1,300 students. This expansion comes amidst a push to increase on-campus enrollment, with the university targeting 41,000 students by 2030. The projects will be presented for a vote by the UT System Board of Trustees, who will also consider a $25 million loan from Regions Bank to facilitate the Cherokee Mills purchase. The university's expansion plans are a testament to its commitment to providing a world-class education and a vibrant campus experience for its students.
