In a shocking revelation, recent statistics have exposed the alarming extent of raw sewage discharges into rivers across Suffolk. This vital information, sourced from The Rivers Trust, is being shared via an interactive map that provides real-time updates on when and where sewage has been released into waterways.
Over just the past two days, raw sewage has entered several local rivers, including the River Dove in Brackenham, the Rattlesden River at Felsham, the River Gipping close to Bramford Road in Ipswich, and the River Glemsford in Glemsford.
Additionally, the situation is dire in Woolpit, where the River Sapiston has experienced sewage discharge for two consecutive days. Furthermore, in Earl Stonham, the tributary of the River Gipping has been contributing to this ongoing issue.
A spokesperson from Anglian Water has addressed the ongoing problem of sewage discharges, indicating that significant measures are being planned. "Starting in 2025, we are proposing a substantial investment of £1 billion aimed directly at mitigating storm overflow spills. This will involve creating new storage solutions, preventing surface water from infiltrating the sewer systems, enhancing monitoring capabilities, and increasing the treatment facilities' capacity to handle heavier rainfall driven by unpredictable weather patterns," she stated.
The goal is ambitious yet necessary: to cut down discharges from storm overflows by 17% over the next five years.
