Police probe link between attempted supermarket ATM thefts (2026)

In a startling turn of events, detectives are currently investigating a possible connection between two attempted ATM thefts at supermarkets located in Glasgow and Edinburgh. These incidents occurred just 100 minutes apart and covered a distance of roughly 40 miles, raising questions about whether the same criminal group was involved.

During the first incident, which took place on Edinburgh Road in Glasgow at approximately 01:10, a white Nissan Navara pick-up truck was used by the suspects. The situation escalated in the second event around 02:50 in Whitehouse Road, Edinburgh, where a black pick-up was reportedly driven aggressively towards a police car. Fortunately, the officer in that incident sustained no injuries.

According to statements from Police Scotland, investigators are closely examining both cases due to the striking similarities between them. Eyewitness reports noted four masked individuals dressed in dark attire near the Glasgow supermarket around the time of the attempted theft. Notably, the white Navara was abandoned at the scene, and the suspects managed to flee the area in a grey hatchback vehicle heading along Edinburgh Road.

Detective Inspector Ross Jamieson commented, "We believe this was a calculated attempt to steal the ATM. Our investigation is moving forward, but we are especially interested in hearing from drivers or local residents who might have information that could assist us."

In the Edinburgh incident, the black Navara was utilized in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the ATM, after which the driver recklessly aimed the vehicle at the police car. Subsequently, he joined two other masked men, possibly entering a vehicle identified as an Audi A3, before speeding away towards Maybury Road. All three suspects were described as wearing masks and dark clothing.

Detective Inspector Alan Sharp expressed a similar call for public assistance, stating, "We are eager to speak with anyone who was present in the area during the time of these incidents and may have observed anything unusual."

Authorities investigating both attempted thefts are urging anyone with pertinent information or relevant video footage from dash-cams or doorbell cameras to reach out to Police Scotland. This is a critical opportunity for community members to aid in resolving these brazen attempts at theft.
