An international student residing in Germany recently took to Instagram to provide a comprehensive breakdown of his monthly living expenses, aiming to guide those who are new to the country. In a post titled "The Reality of Life in Germany," Meesum Abbas emphasized that for individuals seeking long-term stability rather than the conventional "American Dream," Germany may be the more suitable choice.
"Imagine working full-time, receiving a respectable salary, diligently paying your taxes... and yet, at the end of the month, you find yourself with only €150-200 left in your pocket," Abbas shared, illustrating the financial landscape many residents face.
He presented a scenario where an individual earns a gross annual salary of 30,000 euros, which is viewed as average income in Germany. Once taxes and other deductions are taken into account, the take-home pay drops to approximately 2,100 euros per month. A significant portion of this income—ranging from 800 to 1,200 euros—goes straight towards rent. When factoring in additional expenses such as groceries (between 250 to 350 euros), transportation (150 to 250 euros), utilities (150 to 200 euros), and phone bills (20 to 40 euros), it quickly becomes clear that there is minimal room left for savings.
"If you hope to save half of your salary while living here, it might be time to reassess your budget. However, if your goals include enjoying a high quality of life, accessing affordable education, and achieving long-term stability, then you've likely made the right choice by coming here," Abbas remarked.
He pointed out that despite the high tax rates, residents in Germany benefit from robust healthcare services, unemployment insurance, and pension contributions. Furthermore, the country boasts solid labor laws that offer better job security compared to many other places. While he noted that living in Germany might not lead to quick wealth accumulation, it certainly minimizes the risk of financial ruin due to unexpected medical expenses.
"This isn’t about complaining; it’s simply the reality here. Germany prioritizes security over sheer opportunity. You may find yourself trading the allure of the 'American Dream' for the reliability of 'German Stability.' Both paths have their merits; they are just fundamentally different," emphasized Abbas.

As Abbas's post gained popularity, many users on social media echoed his sentiments, noting that while certain areas in Germany can be costly, it's often possible to manage expenses effectively through strategic budgeting.
"If this is what your financial situation looks like, then something might be off balance. It’s not advisable to own a car on such a salary or to pay 1,200 euros in rent for a single person," one user pointed out.
