Endoscopes: Uncovering Rat Infestations in Hidden Spaces (2026)

In the battle against rodents, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is leveraging cutting-edge technology to gain an edge. By employing endoscopes, or borescopes, to inspect hidden drainage systems, the council is taking a proactive approach to rat control. This innovative strategy, already popular in countries like Japan, Singapore, Australia, and Britain, is now making waves in George Town. During a recent clean-up at Tanjung Bungah Market, workers fed an endoscope into concealed drainage, revealing clogged sections where food waste had accumulated. The footage captured not only blockages but also several rats, prompting Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran to order immediate action. This method is particularly crucial in the context of public health. Rats can spread diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and hantavirus through their urine, droppings, or by contaminating food or water. Therefore, effective control is essential. Rajendran emphasized the importance of cleanliness and proper environmental management in public markets, which are vital to the local economy and food supply chain. He urged traders to take responsibility by keeping their stalls clean, properly disposing of food waste, ensuring drains remain free-flowing, and eliminating any potential food or shelter sources for rats. The MBPP's efforts extend beyond laying poisoned bait. They also destroy rat nests, improve food waste management, and educate both traders and the public. The campaign, running from April to July, aims to control rat breeding, reduce the risk of leptospirosis, and enhance urban cleanliness. Between 2022 and June of this year, the MBPP eliminated 57,723 rats. However, the true measure of success is not the number of rats caught but the cleanliness of the environment, which prevents them from breeding in the first place. Every individual, from traders to business owners and members of the public, has a role to play in managing food waste and maintaining clean surroundings. This approach not only addresses the immediate issue of rat control but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility for public health and environmental well-being.
